Talking Points #6

Arguement:

To be completely honest I was really lost during this and was not able to make many connections at all. It went over my head and I had a really hard time with this.

Can someone help me out????

  1. I had the same issue but I think I have an okay idea about what the things meant.
The article from New York Times discusses that despite schools no longer being segregated, they are still unequal. This is due to the fact that people tend to gravitate towards those who are like them - poverty stricken Americans tend to live near other poverty stricken Americans. This can affect the classroom and a child's ability to focus and learn. Despite taking the steps to better integrate schools, it's a very difficult task.
The website gave us more of a background on Brown vs. Board of Education - even just reading about it on Wikipedia might help to give you a better idea.
And for the videos of the interview of Tim Wise it might help to watch them again. I had to watch them a few times to get the point he was trying to make - which was essentially that Barack Obama becoming our president has it's benefits and disadvantages for African Americans.
I hope this kind of helped!

  2. Good start from Heather. Hope that helps Lauren. Re-read the Herbert article and see if you can get your head around that for tomorrow...

  3. It is about being treated equal, we all have the same access to things, but we are not treated as all equals. The people in power group the poor together all going to the same school...That is still dividing the classes.
